I have been wanting to get back into 3D, probably with more of a slant towards Tech Art like I originally went to school for, for a while now. With my desire to start doing more Indie Game Dev as well, this is definitely a skill set I’m going to need in my back pocket. I do thoroughly enjoy doing this type of work, it is a lot less stress than IT, so I figured no time like the present!
What to make though, where to start? Luckily at work we have a group Digital Tutors (now Pluralsight) account, so I grabbed one of the modelling learning paths and started at the beginning. This is the 3rd or 4th module in the first section, but the first big project. You are tasked with making a little RC Buggy, using a few different methods, some Poly box modelling, some NURBS. It is more to get you used to the tools and thinking like a modeller.
There is also some basic UV and texture work to be done, but I am taking it a little bit further than that and going to try and do as good a job as I can, and learn some Substance Designer and Painter as well to finish off the model.
The end goal is to rig up the car and finally bring it into Unity or Unreal and get a tiny little game going, but while I’m working on that part I’ll start on my next modelling project, a cartoon T-Rex!
